New Member of the Family...Sort of...

So...
We're receiving a new 4-legged furry friend next weekend....
A feline friend.
J's grandfather is unable to care for himself anymore and he has these 2 cats...
One is at J's father's house now...and the other is still at the grandfather's house with food and water to last it the week.
J and I have NO idea what this cat looks like or even what gender it is...
All we know is that it's VERY shy and has claws and has been living in very poor conditions for an extended period of time.
We were expecting this new fuzz ball to arrive yesterday, but J's dad didn't bring it home with him.....
So it's been agreed that next weekend is when it will happen...
I went out yesterday (in preparation) to buy a large dog crate to house the kitty and it's litter box, along with some fleece fabric to line the bottom of the crate, until we can get it to the vet and see what the deal is.
(I fear this cat may have fleas or lice or disease and will do everything I can to protect my babies while at the same time being humane to this cat. We don't have a basement and I think the garage will be far too cold - so it will be set up in J's computer room - a room without a door.)
I'm not sure how Panya & Agador will deal with this new little friend...but I can guess...
Panya will be HIGHLY ANNOYED (she does NOT like other creatures - - - I think she only took Agador under her wing because he was a baby and he needed her) and Agador will be like "WHOO HOO ! ! ! NEW FRIEND ! ! ! !"
So, I guess we'll see what happens next weekend !
I have to find out exactly what day we're receiving this kitty so I can call my vet and make an appointment.
We're not sure if we'll keep it or if this will be temporary until we can find it a new home - we'll just have to wait and see. Both J and I are concerned about our kitties and don't want them to be traumatized as a result of trying to help this kitty. (Not to mention the fact that we weren't expecting the expense of another cat right now.)

That's very sweet of you to give this cat another chance rather than just sending him/her to the shelter.

    Sassy,
Things may go smoother for you and you kitties if you introduce them this way:

    1. Keep the new kitty in a room that can be closed off; a bedroom, utility room etc.

    2. Keep the door closed and make sure food and litter box is in there for the new kitty.

    3. Keep the new cat in there for several days to a week.

The cats will smell eachother under the door and (hopefully) become more accustomed to the scents of eachother.

    4. Once ya do open the door try to brush or pet them together (at the same time) this transfers the scent from one cat to another and sometimes smooths things over

Anyway.. don't lose heart - you may, and probably will, have the dominant cat hiss and maybe growl at the newcomer.
    Just goes with the territory.
My Trinity (dominant) still hisses and growls at Nikki - newcomer even after 3 yrs of co-habitation.
But - they have never fought.
I think that it's the dominant thing to do. Just remind the others of 'who's in charge'

    Hope this helps,
    Ken
